Subaru's All Wheel Drive Vs. Honda's Real Time, Volkswagen's All Wheel Drive. This is an internal video that was not meant for public consumption. IT IS NOT A PROMOTIONAL VIDEO! It is a recap for those who attended a driving event in spring 2007 (hence the previous gen Highlander). The events in this video took place one year after the previous shared AWD video at a different location.

My question: are those CVT adapted for off roading?

  • @kx8960

Ok, that was a TIRE test. If you've got all 4 tires spinning, not one of them had traction, and that's down to the tire, NOT the ECU. Because let's face it, NONE of these has a 4WD system, they're ALL open-diff AWD systems with TC controlled by the ECU. FAIL.

The one wheel drive test is just a demonstration of traction control which is only a matter of programing. ua-cam.com/video/XuI-0vI2ojw/v-deo.html Here is a video of an Audi passing the test. There isn't a chance a Passat would just sit there spinning 3 wheels in the real world if you modulate the throttle...unless you turned the traction control off.

I sold Subarus for a while years back and KNOW them to have THE BEST AWD system- bar none-- but I can't get past the "tin-ny" sound- making them sound like they're going to fly apart trying to get up speed for a 4 lane entry-- and they just FEEL "cheap"- although I know they are NOT. It's hard to get past that- and the rep of breakdowns.. WISH I could- I really LIKE the little CROSSTREKS...

"The bulk of the vehicle weight is on the rear and the vehicle must overcome this to move...this is extreme... WTF? The weight of the vehicle never changes and the whole vehicle has to move, always. The Highlander has a button you can push to provide more power to the rear. The 2007 Honda Pilot has a VTM-4 lock button and VSA disable button, which can be used to send more power to both rear wheels - enough to climb a steep slope. Try it out in your simulation.

To be fair. Folkswagen only claimed it will "move" with one wheel. They did not say it will CLIMB with one wheel. and it looked like it would move on a flat surface.. The last subaru suprised me as my open diff forester stops immediately when 2 wheels are off the ground :)

For people talking about the tire. those cars are all stock, whatever tire comes from the factory. If the car lurching forward that means the tire got traction, but the computer/drivetrain just not able to use it. except for mazda in the video, all the rest of them lurch, so tire is not the problem.

One of my brother and sister in law’s use to own a Tribeca. They sold it to one of their granddaughters to get here the rest of the way through college. It had almost 400K miles when she got it. Though she had a used engine put in it (the used engine had just over 200K miles on it, the Tribeca finally died with 450K miles, (250K on the 2nd engine). It was the original transmission. She bought herself a new Outback after graduating college (6 years ago) and still drives it. My other brother and sister in law buy a new Outback every 6 years because she drives 50K miles a year, so in 6 years she puts 300K miles on her Outback’s. Three years ago she hit a deer on the way to work and totaled her Outback. This was during the pandemic and there were no Outback’s in the Billings area so they found a new 2020 in Missoula. Even though the totaled Outback had 250K miles on it, they had to come up with an additional $5K for a new Outback.

We used to drive Toyota’s. We desperately needed an AWD vehicle for my wife, as we live 5 miles from town up in the mountains and 25 miles from the city. We get 5-7 feet of snow every winter and we have to plow and maintain our private road ourselves. On all of our Toyota’s AWD vehicles we had to put studded tires on for winter traction. My wife wanted an Outback for her birthday so I bought her one. We drove on the factory tires year round until they wore out. We then installed Michelin Cross Climate tires. They’re Awesome tires for dry, snowy, wet, slushy roads. I was so impressed with the traction of her Outback that I decided to replace my 11 Rav Limited 4WD with a Forester Touring last December, (2022). I miss the 269hp 3.5 V6 in my Rav, but the traction, comfort, outward visibility, safety of our Subie’s are awesome. After buying our Subaru’s and selling our Toyota’s our insurance premiums DROPPED by $300 per year per Subaru. I asked my insurance agent why our premiums dropped and we were told it’s because of the safety, accident avoidance, traction control system and that Subaru’s are less likely to be stolen. So far our Subaru’s have been flawless. Both of our Subaru’s are 2019 year models. My wife’s Outback had only 5,600 miles on it in 21 and my Forester had 4,700 miles. My wife’s Outback now has only 28K miles and my Forester has 11K miles. Our Subaru dealership has a poor service department in Wenatchee, WA so we take our Subie’s to H&D Auto in Wenatchee who only works on Subaru’s. When the Outback hits 30K miles I’ll take it in for the 30K mile maintenance. Subaru wants $600, but H&D wants only $350. I have the oil and filter changed every 5K miles with Kirkland full synthetic oil. Kirkland (from Costco), flows quicker in cold temperatures than Mobile One. I’ll have our mechanic change the front and rear differential, transfer case, bleed the brakes, change the cabin filter and everything else that needs to be replaced. Our mechanic recommends replacing the CVT fluid every 60K miles, so that will be done as well.

  • @Doc1855

This is why my wife has an Outback and I have a Forester. Our AWD Toyota’s always had to have studded tires and every winter. Even when our Subaru’s had the factory tires on them, we still had no issues with traction even in our winter months when we get 5-7 feet of snow. Now that our factory tires had to be replaced, we replaced them with Michelin Cross Climate 2. They’re Awesome on dry, wet, and snowy conditions. They’re a quiet tire and they don’t lower our mpg. When they wear out, we’ll replace them with new Cross Climate tires. After switching from Toyota AWD vehicles and replacing them with Subaru’s, our insurance premiums DROPPED by $600 per year. This is due to the traction, accident avoidance and safety of our Subie’s. Both our Outback and our Forester Touring are 2019 year models. When our Subie’s wear out, we’ll be replacing them with another Subaru.

Well that just about proves it 100%. I would definitely go with subaru if i want AWD. Im amazed that the other companies actually advertise their cars as full time AWD but its a total scam. They literally cant even drive the rear wheels. Its FWD. All those extra parts and engineering just to add weight to the car and do nothing. Thats totally NUTS. 😂

I've had several Subarus; Forester, Legacy, Outback, Impreza ... But replaced with Mitsubishi Pajero iO because the Subarus had inferior traction on up hill, compacted snow. The Pajero has four-wheel-drive, diff lock and limited slip, so with new snow tyres will plough up really steep slopes where the Subarus would get stuck. And for the equivalent of 700 pounds at auction, what's not to like? Jack, the Japan Alps Brit
